If you have been to one of our functions in the past couple years or listened in on a routine CERT net, you know Chris Smith. Chris graduated Basic Training in 2015 and quickly became a familiar face to many of you. Last year, Chris became a certified CERT Instructor and contributed much of his time to helping 44 Allen residents get through 2017 Basic Training. One of which, is his wife, Kim, who donned the vest and hard hat last fall to become one of our newest additions to the team.
But how much do we really know about them? Let’s see…
What is your place of birth?
Kim – Baylor Hospital in Dallas, same as my mom and daughter
Chris – Shreveport, LA. My family moved to Dallas when I was 1-1/2 years old
What brought you to Allen, TX?
Family – Chris’s mom moved here about 15 years ago and his brother & his family live here. When we moved back from a 10 year stay in Florida in 2015 we thought it would be a good idea to move near Chris’s mom.
Tell us about your immediate family (including any pets).
We have a daughter who is a junior at A&M in College Station. Pets? Same answer.
What do you do for a living?
Kim is and Administrative Assistant with a trust company in downtown Dallas, the same company she worked for before we moved to Florida. Chris is a realtor with Keller Williams and would love to talk with you about buying or selling a home, or just about anything.
If you had 30 minutes of free-time, what would you do?
Kim – Go shopping
Chris – Spend it with my honey and if she was not around turn on the ham radio.
Any hobbies / extra-curricular activities?
Kim – Serve in a kid class at Watermark Community Church
Chris – Lead Bible translation teams on other continents and play ham radio
What is the next big milestone for your household?
Getting our daughter through A&M is the biggest milestone we are targeting for the next couple of years. We bought a house recently so Chris is trying to sneak a 35’ antenna tower (with a few antennas connected) into the back yard.
What would we hear if we turned on the radio in your vehicle?
Kim – 1080 KRLD, 89.7 WAY-FM or 101.7 Air1.
Chris – the CERT repeater or KRLD
What personality traits and/or skill sets do you feel make you a valuable or unique member of the team?
Kim – My organization skills and attention to details provide thoroughness and accuracy when accomplishing a task.
Chris – I can listen and follow directions, lead when needed, and am reasonably good on a radio.
What aspect of CERT training has the largest impact on your life?
Kim – Going through CERT has made me much more aware of my surroundings, the people and circumstances around me as it pertains to emergencies.
Chris – The general knowledge base learned in class and in the ongoing training gives me the confidence to do what I may need to do in a crisis situation and the prudence to know when it is time to wait for professional responders.
Whether you show up early or stay late at any of our events, you’re likely to see this extraordinary couple helping out and shaking hands. We are truly fortunate to have them on the team!
